Splash into the New Year with Swim.com!

We here at Swim.com hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and welcome you to 2018!  Did you get that new activity tracking watch that you were hoping for?  Did you make a New Year’s Resolution to get back in the pool? Or maybe you made a resolution to start swimming for the first time and are wondering where to start? Let us help you!

For those of you who are new to Swim.com, we’re a free online fitness platform that helps you track your swimming progress. We have standalone lap tracking apps for Apple Watch, Samsung Gear Sport and Android Wear devices as well as a way to sync workouts to our platform from other manufacturers of lap swim tracking devices (for a list of some compatible watches, click here).  While using a compatible device with Swim.com, you won’t need to worry about counting laps or keeping track of timing and intervals, all you need to do is swim! Once your workout is uploaded into your Swim.com feed, you can review a myriad of details such as pace, split times, stroke rate, stroke count, SWOLF score, and more to help keep track of how you are improving. If you don’t swim with a lap tracking device, you can still enter in your swim details manually to help you keep track of your progress. Additionally, if you are interested in purchasing a device, signing up for a free Swim.com account will get you a discount on a compatible device at our partner site SwimOutlet.com.

Swimming is a challenging yet rewarding activity, but if you keep at it over time, you’ll see positive improvements in your fitness and muscle tone! If you are new to the sport, it can be difficult to know just where to begin with your workouts and also to have the motivation to stick with it.  Sometimes, getting started is as easy as just swimming freestyle until you can’t anymore, resting until you feel ready to go again, and then swimming some more.  While this is a great way to begin, after time this can get mentally challenging to stay engaged with. It can also get frustrating as your body will need time to adjust to the breathing patterns necessary for lap swimming. Try not to get discouraged as you are starting out. Stick to it and you will see your stamina and strength improve! As you improve, you’ll be wanting to change things up to keep your workouts fresh and challenging.  Luckily, we’ve got some inspiration for you! Swim.com has a feature on our Apple and Android mobile apps in which you can select from hundreds of different workout prescriptions to follow.  There’s something for everyone from first-timers to experts. You can even craft your own workouts and share them with others!

As you continue your swim program, you might find it helpful to seek out private or small group coaching at your local facility to help improve your technique. The benefits of improving your technique will not only make you a better swimmer, but it might help you avoid overuse injury as well. Taking it a step further, for adults there is the potential to join a masters swim club, of which there are thousands around the world. Don’t let the name fool you, you don’t have to be exceptional to join a masters club, just willing to swim, have fun, and improve!  Joining a masters club can give you access to coaching, camaraderie, support, and friendly competition at the pool.
