The End of the Pebble Era

Long before Swim.com had a presence on Apple Watch, WearOS, and Samsung, the Swim.com app started out as a companion app for Pebble Smartwatches. When Pebble announced in December 2016 that they were shutting down operations and device manufacturing and would eventually be shutting down its services completely, we were saddened to hear the news.

Unfortunately that time has come. Recently we became aware that Pebble workouts were no longer transferring from our app on Pebble watches to the Swim.com app.  This occurred because Pebble has finally disconnected its services. The following links reference what happened and on what date and how this has affected the device and some of the third party apps like Swim.com.

Quick synopsis from the links above for the “too long, didn’t read” crowd: on July 19th, 2018 Pebble finally shuttered their cloud services, which is what we believe negatively affected file transfers for Swim.com (and other third party apps).  Around the time that Pebble made the announcement that they were ceasing operations, we made the decision to stop actively developing software for the platform and pursue expanding to other devices. While we have continued to offer support to our Pebble customers since that announcement, from this point on we will no longer be offering extended support because of the disconnection of cloud services, which rendered our app unusable on the Pebble platform.

We have had some users report that linking their watches up to the Rebble.io service (which is referenced in the www.wareable.com link above) has restored Swim.com file transfers. This is not something we have tested nor will we. We can only report that we have had some users tell us that the service works once they get their Pebble device running on Rebble.

On a related note, our plan was to support the Pebble devices on our mobile app for as long as Pebble servers and services was still running, but now that it has ended it’s likely that sometime in the near future we will be removing the Pebble as a device option from our app entirely.

  1. Just wanted to note that I’ve used two Garmin watches since the Pebble and Pebble is still better as a swim tracker. Thanks!
